This is the tale of John Cherokee
Alabama John Cherokee
Indian man from Millowmuskie
Alabama John Cherokee
Way - hay - ya
Uh! Alabama John Cherokee
Way - hay - ya
Uh! Alabama John Cherokee

They make him a slave in ol’ Alabam’
He run away every time he can

They ship him aboard of a whaling ship
Again and again he give them the slip

They catch him again, and they tie him up tight
Kept him in the dark without any light

They give him nothin’ but to eat or drink
And soon his bones start to rattle an’ clink

But now his ghost can be often seen
Sittin’ on a grain truck all wet an’ green

At the break o’ day he goes below
Oh, that is when the crops do grow
